Professional Statement

Wendy Veronica Xin received her Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 2016, and her B.A. and B.S. from Washington University in St. Louis; she is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of English. Her book project, The Secret Lives of Plot, argues that although plots and plotting are often seen as the least complicated aspects of narrative form, they emerge as points at which self-consciousness and social anxiety are expressed in and inform the structural logic of "the novelistic." Other teaching and research interests range more broadly across nineteenth-century British literature and film studies, and include questions concerning the aesthetics of realism, structures of attachment and intimacy, new materialisms, and the sociological and philosophical dimensions of literary and cinematic representation. In Fall 2016 she will be teaching an English 190 research seminar, "On Style."
